World of Warcraft players are not happy with the newest cosmetic item on the Battle.net shop. This transmog’s recent addition to the World of Warcraft cash shop has set a troubling precedent for Trading Post cosmetics.
Previously, World of Warcraft fans discovered files for three cosmetic items – the Feathered Drape of the Guardian, the Feathered Cowl of the Guardian, and the Standard of the Guardian – that were inspired by the legendary wizard Medivh. When the Trading Post rotated its inventory for May, an error added these items to the stock before being swiftly removed shortly after.
However, World of Warcraft fans were recently shocked to find these Trading Post items on the Battle.net cash shop in The Guardian Pack, available for $8. Interestingly enough, the ensemble is specifically listed as a limited-time offer; these new items leave the cash shop indefinitely on May 31. According to the listing, the Guardian Pack will then be added to the Trading Post “no sooner than three months after the pack leaves the shop,” somewhere between September and December.
Though this is the first time World of Warcraft has added an item to the cash shop with the intention of removing it to put on the Trading Post later, evidence suggests it has thought of the idea before. The Waveborn Diplomat’s Regalia was also added to the Battle.net store in early April, but its entry on the in-game Collections tab lists it as a Trading Post ensemble, indicating World of Warcraft could do the same with it in the future. Likewise, several old items were retired from the cash shop before the Trading Post launched, with Blizzard confirming they may be available in later montly inventories of the new World of Warcraft feature.
As one can imagine, players aren’t happy with this recent development. Many World of Warcraft fans were hoping to get these items on the Trading Post soon, and are upset to find they won’t appear on it for several months. Some also think trying to sell the items for real money first also seems exceptionally greedy, and that it sets a troubling precedent for commodifying the new feature – especially since WoW previously stated the Trading Post was supposed to be free from the woes of FOMO and RMT.
On the other hand, many players pointed out it was good World of Warcraft was transparent with its plans for the Guardian Pack. After all, reception would have been much worse if it appeared on the Trading Post without warning. Either way, players now have the power to help shape future Blizzard marketing practices by purchasing this transmog with cash or Trader’s Tender.
